Together, people can do what none of us could accomplish alone. Alcoholics Anonymous can serve as a source of personal experience and be an ongoing support system for recovering alcoholics. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, non-denominational, multiracial, non-political, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or educational requirements. America’s most isolated and at-risk children are the estimated 7.3 million children who have one or both parents under some form of state or federal supervision. Without effective intervention, 70 percent of these children will likely follow their parent’s path into jail or prison. Womens Empowerment League has partnered with the Amachi mentoring program, which was developed to provide at-risk children with a different positive path - by establishing the consistent presence of loving, caring people of faith. Amachi mentors meet weekly with a child who has been carefully matched with them; they often live and worship in the same neighborhoods as the children. Amachi’s hope is that one-to-one mentoring by caring adults will significantly improve the life opportunities of the children. Studies have clearly demonstrated that the Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS) mentoring model has positive effects - and now through Amachi, the strengths of mentoring and congregational volunteers are brought together.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. It does this through services that are consistent with its congressional charter and the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The Monroe County Chapter follows this mission in its work for the communities of Monroe County, as well as the Townships of Porter and Lehman in the neighboring county of Pike. Monroe County is a resort county whose population fluctuates with the seasonal attractions of the Poconos. Our Chapter was chartered on May 16, 1917 as a result of World War I. The Chapter has remained active since then, growing and working tirelessly to meet the ever-changing needs of our residents.

One of the most satisfying aspects of working in the American Red Cross is being part of a long-established and highly respected organization with worldwide affiliations. Respect for the Red Cross is based on the uniformly high standards of performance and service that are established by the organization. Every local chapter benefits from this respect and has, at the same time, the freedom to manage its own affairs in accordance with national policies and regulations.

For more than 30 years, the Center for Developmental Disabilites (CDD) of Pike County, LTD. has provided educational, therapeutic and family support services for children with developmental delays and disabilities from birth to kindergarten age. Our grass roots response began with one woman, a nurse, who visited families and helped them access information and services. This support was informal and often based on word of mouth, from family to family. As our program has evolved, we have expanded our program to serve all children eligible for pre-kindergarten services through a variety of programs and as a fee-for-service program. It is our goal to maximize every child's potential. We believe every child deserves the opportunity for growth and development in a setting that meets their individual needs and concerns. We are committed to supporting children and their families by providing programs and services that are developmentally and appropriate and individualized for each child. CDD does not reject or eject a child for behavioral issues. Occupational and physical therapy, speech services and behavioral consultations are integrated into the classroom program to support the achievement of developmental and learning outcomes for children with and without disabilities. Our family support services work closely with parent and caregivers of children to ensure positive parent-child relationships. Additionally, family support services provide education and information regarding additional community services and facilitate a family’s access to those community services.

CDD is a licensed Early Care and Education Center by the Department of Public Welfare as a Specialized Day Care Center. CDD is a Pennsylvania STARS Three Early Care and Education site. STARS is a commonwealth of Pennsylvania initiative recognizing Early Care and Education programs that exceed licensing requirements in programming, health and safety practices. Currently CDD is the only STARS Three early care and education site in Pike County.Base

Hotline:This program, being implemented in partnership with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and Citizens Energy Corporation, was created in 2005 to offset a perfect storm of catastrophic events within some of the poorest and most vulnerable communities in the United States. Decreased supplies, resulting from hurricanes Katrina and Rita, led to steep increases in fuel costs while cuts in the federal Heating Oil Assistance Program placed unbearable burdens on family budgets already stretched thin.CITGO Petroleum Corporation and Citizens Energy are working with thousands of heating oil dealers in 23 states to deliver millions of gallons of heating oil to families and individuals in need. The help is provided to those who receive fuel assistance from the federal government and others in need. In addition, the program also provides heating oil assistance to homeless shelters, a number of large, multi-unit buildings in New York City, and hundreds of Native American tribes. This program has been extended to the following states and the District of Columbia: Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin. CITGO is also providing discount oil directly to 220 Native American communities in the states of Alaska, Arizona, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oregon and Washington. The benefit is 100 gallons per household. E.A.R.S. is a non-profit organization. With the onset of declining vision, comes the need to re-learn how to do many daily activities. Our goal is to help people maintain their independence with low vision rehabilitation training.

We provide, free of charge, audio-cassette lesson tapes that teach adaptive daily living skills to the vision-impaired and their caregivers. The lessons, modeled after current blind rehabilitation techniques, are a must for anyone coping with loss of eyesight. By listening to E.A.R.S. lesson tapes, you'll hear uncomplicated, straightforward ways to help you do the things made difficult by low vision. Personal grooming, doing the laundry, and dialing the telephone can once again become simple, enjoyable events.

Low vision rehabilitation training is learning practical techniques to overcome the limitations of vision loss. It provides solutions for safely moving about, making the most of available light and contrasting color, and using your sense of touch to replace information your eyes used to provide. It enables you to continue to live independently. By listening to E.A.R.S. audio-taped lessons, you will learn many new ways to successfully continue to do everyday activities when you have reduced vision.
